When in 1924 the 'Zeemeeuw' was launched in the shipyard Vuyk in Capelle a/d IJssel, the tide had actually already turned for the large sailing ships. Cargo transportation by sailing ship was gradually put aside by steam-powered (or diesel engines) cargo transportation.
During the construction of the 'Zeemeeuw' they already took this development into account; a 'Kromhout' engine with 80 hp was placed. However the sails were still essential because the insurance companies were aloof to insure sailing ships with a diesel engine only.
The 'Zeemeeuw' actively participated in the coastal trade until 1974 and transported a lot of wood from Scandinavia to the Netherlands. In 1990 the ship was found in Groningen and there the ship was rebuilt for the sailing charter trade and started sailing again.
During this rebuilding the preservation of its beautiful line pattern, luxury and comfort for its guests came first, as is evident from the current draft.
